The Twin Farms
Readers’ Choice Awards for the years 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 $$$ | GOLD LIST 2018
Things to adore: Located around 75 miles southeast of Burlington in Barnard, Vermont, between maple and pine trees, is an 18th-century home that was formerly owned by Nobel Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis. The original building, which is now a part of a 300-acre Relais & Chateaux estate, is surrounded by eight treehouses designed by Michaelis Boyd, ten separate cottages, the two-bedroom Lodge, and the four-bedroom Farmhouse. The accommodations range from the simple, rustic-chic treehouses to the dog-friendly Log Cabin, which has hand-hewn hickory and oak furnishings, and the contemporary, Peter Bohlin-designed Aviary, which has a living-room hot tub.
Enjoy unlimited farm-to-table meals prepared by chef de cuisine Sylvain Courbet, whose daily menus are subject to change, as well as complimentary wine and Champagne at this all-inclusive location. Return customers can anticipate the newer Twiggs restaurant, which offers a more casual (but no less delicious) experience than the Dining Room’s degustation menu.
Romance factor: Spend the entire weekend holed up in your lodging, making requests by phoning 125 for everything and everything. You can request a lavish, multi-course meal served en suite with wine pairings, more wood for the fireplace, or another bottle of Cabernet. Or ask for a packed lunch to enjoy at one of the various picnic areas on the property,
which include a mountaintop Lift Shack, a two-person glass house with a view of the food gardens, and a platform high in the treetops. Take a trek in the summer or go skiing in the winter to experience the peace and quiet of nature. After skiing, spend some time in Twin Farms’ Lean-to Adirondack, which is furnished with Vermont Wool blankets and a potbelly stove for warmth.

Colorado’s Dunton Hot Springs in Dolores
$$$ | Readers’ Choice Awards 2017–2024 | GOLD LIST 2018–2020
What’s to love: How does a historic Colorado Rockies mining town transform into a truly unique luxury vacation spot? The water—more precisely, the hot springs—holds the solution. Leveraging the area’s natural resource, Dunton Hot Springs consists of a group of refurbished log cottages encircled by six distinct hot springs. After your geothermal fix, enjoy the open wilderness, which is perfect for hiking and horseback riding, the library, and the recently renovated Saloon, which features comfortable private eating areas. Additionally, schedule some downtime at Dunton’s amazing spa, which uses Amala’s natural skincare line in its services.
Romance factor: For the best stay, reserve the three-night Mountain Romance package. The package includes two 75-minute spa treatments, Champagne upon arrival, all meals and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), and one half-day activity for two people with private guidance. The lodge’s Sleigh journey & Dine experience is worth adding. It includes a horse-drawn carriage journey to Dunton River Camp at dusk, where you’ll enjoy a romantic dinner for two in a 19th-century farmhouse. After the meal, you may enjoy cocktails and a campfire outside.

The location of Charleston
Readers’ Choice Awards for 2017–2018–2019–2020–2021, 2022–2023, 2024
What to Love: This iconic hotel in Charleston’s historic area, which was formerly a part of the Belmond portfolio, took a new turn in 2021 and started its own path. The property is being transformed for $150 million under new ownership. By September 2024, the hotel had started to reinvent its traditional style by fusing modern sophistication with classic elegance. Mahogany mattresses, freestanding armoires, and silk curtains adorning floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the neighborhood are typical “Once Upon a Time in Charleston” accents found inside the suites.
The magnificent lobby, with its grandeur reminiscent of the past, bustles with activity as residents and visitors meet at the Thoroughbred Club for drinks or take pictures beside the grand double staircase. The hotel’s open door policy for animal pals, which welcomes dogs of all sizes without charging extra, will also be appreciated by pet owners.
Romance Factor: The hotel is situated in the heart of Charleston’s bustling downtown, just a short distance from famous sites, picturesque parks, and cobblestone streets. Reserve a table at Sorelle, where Chef Nick Dugan creates Italian cuisine with ingredients from the Low Country, for a memorable meal. Back at the hotel, go up to the Club Level for free beverages all day long and access to a chic two-story bar with changing gourmet cuisines.

Miramar Beach’s Rosewood
2020 Readers’ Choice Awards $$$ | HOT LIST 2020, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024
What to Love: This expansive beach resort is reminiscent of a coastal fantasy. Rosewood’s famous hospitality elevates this lovely blend of contemporary beach refinement and laid-back sophistication, which opened in 2019. With 16 acres of clapboard cottages, rolling lawns, clipped boxwoods, and stylish coastal rooms, all surrounded by infinite Pacific views, high design meets Americana. Like the gardens, the estate’s 119 rooms and 34 suites have been carefully designed.
The terrace-level ocean suites are the most sought-after lodging options because they provide the unique opportunity to walk directly onto the sand from your door, which is unrivaled in Santa Barbara. The experience is further enhanced by six restaurants serving creative cuisine influenced by California’s coastline, as well as resort-style features including bocce courts, an adults-only pool, a luxurious Sense Spa, and daily beach activities.
Romance Factor: Once you get to our beautiful retreat, it’s difficult to leave. Toast the day with Champagne at the Miramar Beach Bar for the ultimate California beach vibes. You could even catch a laid-back A-lister enjoying the atmosphere. They are also lured to this place because of the amazing food, the ambience, and the hassle-free seclusion.

The Farmhouse Hotel
The Gold List for Readers’ Choice Awards for the years 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024
Things to Love: The essence of Sonoma wine country is encapsulated in this 25-room boutique retreat, a sophisticated yet welcoming haven for foodies and wine connoisseurs who value well-considered luxury. Cottages, barn suites, and farmhouse rooms are among the lodging options; each combines contemporary comforts with rustic elements. Imagine deep soaking baths, private patios, sliding barn doors, and roaring fireplaces.
Hand-cut soaps, handmade cosmetics, and, of course, copious amounts of excellent wine are served to guests. Experience multi-course dining at the Farmhouse Restaurant, where hyper-local, seasonal foods take center stage in constantly changing menus, unwind by the heated pool on-site, get treatments at The Wellness Barn, and socialize during nightly wine hours.

There, you may enjoy a peaceful and private retreat while strolling beneath stately old trees.

The Sea Ranch Lodge
$$ | AWARDS FOR READERS’ CHOICE 2024
Things to adore: The Sea Ranch Lodge offers genuine escapism without leaving the continental United States, even though it is located in Sonoma County and just off California’s famous Highway 1. The 17-room lodge, which is situated on a rocky, high-rising section of Northern California shoreline known as the “Scottish Coast,” offers guests breath-taking views of azure oceans, moody skies that change constantly, and verdant emerald landscapes everywhere they look. This unbroken relationship with nature stems from the concept of the progressive designers, architects,
and landscape designers who initially made the lodge a reality in 1965. The lodge has resurfaced as a carefully modernized replica of its original low-rise, eco-chic predecessor following a multi-year, substantial makeover that was finished in the summer of 2023. Its unusual design—stacked wood-and-glass cubes, sloping shed roofs, and striking geometric details—offers a Scandinavian-inspired utopia where history, modernity, and timelessness merge along the California coast.
romanticism factor: The interior spaces are a masterwork of warmth, romanticism, and simplicity. Oversized tufted seats invite leisure, in-room fireplaces cast a warm glow, and daybeds embrace rectangular bay windows. The walls are decorated with hand-woven textile art, which gives them a unique, handmade feel. The deliberate absence of televisions feels more like an encouragement to participate completely than an omission. In fact, this is the type of environment that encourages writing in a notebook, having private discussions, drawing outside, or just taking in the breathtaking beauty of the surrounds while feeling totally present and together.

Santa Barbara’s San Ysidro Ranch
Readers’ Choice Awards for 2017–2021–2022–2023–2024 $$$ | GOLD LIST 2025
Things to adore: The epitome of American love getaways, this 550-acre refuge with a rich history and a view of the picturesque Montecito coast has played home to the elites of Hollywood, world politics, and high society over the years, including honeymooners John and Jacqueline Kennedy in 1953. Today, San Ysidro Ranch is a thorough examination of ultra-luxury, both historical and contemporary, where romantic love stories are set in motion by the lush gardens, picturesque cottages covered in vines, and meticulous personnel.
With carefully chosen antique furniture, original artwork, four-poster canopy beds, and luxurious soaking tubs, each of the 38 rooms is uniquely furnished (all cottages also boast private patios with outdoor rain showers, huge sunken bathtubs, and dining areas). Olive and oak groves, lavender fields, lemon pergolas, and rose gardens adorn the well-kept grounds, which frame pathways leading to sought-after creature comforts like a heated hillside pool, a full-service spa, the award-winning Stonehouse restaurant, and the hidden celebrity hangout, The Speakeasy at Plow & Angel. The nightly cost includes complimentary dining.
Romance factor: Savor a candlelit dinner in the most historic area of the property, a genuine 1825 old adobe cottage, while selecting from The Stonehouse’s exquisite farm-and-ocean-to-table menu (three must-tries are the line-caught English Channel Dover sole, the pan-seared Santa Barbara abalone with housemade squid ink capellini, and the Santa Barbara diver-caught sea urchin). A designated sommelier will lead you through flights of excellent local and international wines during a tasting in the Secret Cellar, which is hidden underneath the Ranch’s main underground wine cellar’s 15,500+ bottles. For exciting hikes and activities in Santa Barbara wine country, venture off-property.

Highlands, North Carolina’s Skyline Lodge
Our favorite time to visit is in the fall, but this renovated retro-chic motor lodge in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains is a budget-friendly way to enjoy North Carolina’s wonderful outdoors throughout the year. It’s also a great place for couples who enjoy taking their dogs along, even on romantic excursions. There are guest rooms encircling a lifestyle-driven lawn where people and dogs are free to roam (cornhole and s’mores, anyone?). Fantastic dining and drinks are literally only a few steps away thanks to the on-site Oak Steakhouse restaurant, which is situated at the edge of the property.
Romance factor: There are many of paths to pick from, including Whiteside Mountain, a short but steep two-mile track that offers expansive vistas from the tallest vertical cliffs in the eastern United States. Days here are frequently spent on fulfilling treks. Explore the many beautiful waterfalls for which the Highlands are known, beginning with a visit to the tranquil Ranger Falls and an exciting climb to High Falls in Lake Glenville’s Pines Recreation Area. Enjoy boating, biking, horseback riding, and fly-fishing during the warmer months—after all, you’re in the heart of North Carolina trout country.
