introduction Best Honeymoon Destinations
Take a romantic train ride, hike the Appalachian Trail, or stay in an overwater villa to find your post-nuptial joy.
Theoretically, a honeymoon should be an experience of a lifetime. However, the “best honeymoon destinations” are as arbitrary as the ideal first date or a memorable proposal. Fortunately, there are countless ways to celebrate a marriage because the world is so vast. We’ve compiled a list of 15 choices for those who enjoy history, culture, animals, beaches, adventure, and more. Additionally, there are some amazing extravagant suites that keep newlyweds equally busy if they, well, never want to leave their hotel room.
Since it was first published, this article has been updated with fresh information. With further coverage by Katie Lockhart. For the Hibernian hideout, Ireland
The lush hills of Ireland are calling, so add U2 and the Cranberries to your honeymoon playlist. Relais & Châteaux’s newly renovated Cashel Palace Hotel in County Tipperary reopened in March 2022, about two hours from Dublin. Constructed in 1732 for an archbishop, the elegant Palladian manor today boasts a 56-foot indoor pool, air-conditioned guest rooms, elevators, and a spa and sauna.
The hotel, which has 42 bedrooms and just nine luxurious suites, feels cozy and private. It’s a great spot to enjoy an outdoor seaweed bath, wander through beautiful English-style gardens in the morning, or have afternoon tea in the Queen Anne Room using delicate bone china. Naturally, adventurous couples will take advantage of these gorgeous rural settings by climbing the historic pilgrimage route known as St. Declan’s Way, discovering the medieval Rock of Cashel and Hore Abbey, or participating in a chilling ghost walk through eerie Leap Castle.

For a glamorous Crusoe experience, consider the Maldives.
A honeymoon in the Maldives is the ideal time and location to indulge on a trip. The stunning Fari Islands, with its ultra-luxe resorts, community marina, and beach club, truly boost the ante. Screensaver-blue waters and Pinterest-worthy overwater bungalows are commonplace in this part of the world. From Velana International Airport in the North Malé Atoll, couples can take a 50-minute speedboat ride to the Ritz-Carlton Maldives or Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, two gorgeous hotels. The third, the Capella Maldives, designed by Kengo Kuma, is scheduled to debut in 2027.
The first flagship hotel of Patina Hotels & Resorts, a relatively new lifestyle brand from Capella Hotel Group, is located on the Fari Islands, Patina Maldives. With 90 beach and pool villas with one to three bedrooms, 20 studios, a specially commissioned James Turrell Skyspace pavilion,
and a plant-based dining experience located in an organic permaculture garden, it was created by Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan of Studio MK27. In particular, honeymooners should be aware of Patina’s new Island Romance package, which includes meditation sessions, couples massages, private dinners, and an opportunity to participate in the resort’s coral conservation initiative.

For the oenophile retreat, Napa Valley
Wine country for a honeymoon? It seems like the ideal combination. Rustic cottages (from $995 a night) are set among rolling vines at the Auberge Resorts Collection’s 712-acre Stanly Ranch on the banks of the Napa River. (The vineyard and working ranch are well-known for their chardonnay and pinot noir varieties.) Couples can enjoy a wine-themed spa treatment, vineyard hop to nearby wineries (such as Scribe and Matthiasson), play bocce on the resort’s “great lawn,” ride among olive orchards.
splash around the hilltop pool, or take a 10-minute hotel shuttle to downtown Napa.where guests can enjoy international food and excellent cabernet sauvignon. (Angèle Restaurant & Bar, a charming French restaurant on the river, is great for both.) Visit Brown Estate, the area’s first and only Black-owned vineyard, while you’re downtown. A treasured memento is a bottle of their zinfandel.

Portugal, for the combination of city and beach
The remote archipelago is now more accessible than ever for American tourists thanks to a recently added year-round direct route from New York to Funchal, the capital of Portugal’s Autonomous Region of Madeira. Beyond its exhilarating mountain bike and hiking routes, Madeira is a foodie’s paradise: Savor rum at Porto da Cruz, a steam-powered distillery; dine at the secluded beachside restaurant Fajã dos Padres, where many of the ingredients are grown organically on-site; and enjoy a six-, nine-, or 12-course tasting menu at the Michelin-starred Desarma, which Chef Octávio Freitas opened in 2023 on the rooftop of the boutique-y Views Baía hotel.
Fly to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, which is home to the oldest bookstore on the planet (Bertrand) and the recently refurbished Royal Treasury Museum at the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda, if you’re ready to swap small-town charm for big-city action. Take a tiling class at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, browse the upscale shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, also known as the Champs Elysées of Lisbon,
or drive an hour south to the beaches in the gorgeous Setúbal area to get more vitamin D. Locking in one of the 53 rooms or suites at AlmaLusa, the only hotel in Comporta that is accessible to a beach, and kayaking beneath the peninsular cliffs in Parque Natural de Arrábida are musts.

For the winter wonderland, Hokkaido
Honeymooners might think about taking a winter vacation to Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island and the biggest and wildest of its 47 prefectures, rather than following the crowded Tokyo-Mt. Fuji-Kyoto itinerary. With Kussharo Eco Tours, one of two local companies offering year-round canoe tours, you may begin your adventure at Akan Mashu National Park by paddling around Lake Kussharo,
the second-largest crater lake in the world, and along the tranquil Kushiro River. (If you’re lucky, your guide might see a rare Blakiston’s fish owl or a white-tailed eagle.) Within the park’s limits, Lake Mashu is well worth a visit. It’s among the world’s purest lakes.
During an educational Anytime, Ainutime! trip to Lake Akan, learn about the Ainu, the original residents of Hokkaido. Another must-see destination is Ainu Kotan, one of the biggest indigenous communities in Japan. Everything is covered, including language, foraging, culture, and crafts. You can also help the community by shopping at one of the more than 20 Ainu-owned businesses in the neighborhood.
The open-air onsen at Oyado KinkiyuBettei Suikazura in the steaming hot springs town of Kawayu is the ideal place to relax at night, regardless of what you do during the day. The spring-fed waters are some of the most acidic in Japan, which is great for some skin disorders but may also damage jewelry, so take off your new rings before you go in.

Peru, for the immersion in the Amazon
Uniworld’s 16-day Peruvian Amazon & Machu Picchu Exploration (starting at $13,999 per guest) is a great option for newlyweds who are itching for a little adventure. The program includes a weeklong voyage on the Aria Amazon, a sumptuous riverboat with 16 stylishly built bedrooms that have floor-to-ceiling windows. It begins and ends in Lima.
The featured activities include: kayaking or canoeing the tarry black waters of the Yanayacu-Pucate River; jungle trekking with a naturalist through the San Jose de Sarapanga forest, keeping an eye out for 300-pound water lilies; and a skiff ride on the Marañón River in Iquitos, where lucky couples may spot pink dolphins or one of 64 rare birds;and traveling to Maynas to visit a manatee rescue and rehabilitation center. A trip to Machu Picchu, the legendary wonder, is, of course, the highlight.

Bermuda, for a relaxed island retreat
Bermuda’s popularity among honeymooners may be due to its pink sand beaches, British colonial architecture, or the fact that it’s only a two-hour flight from New York City. The opening of a modern terminal at LF Wade International Airport has made it even more alluring. Drawing inspiration from Singapore Changi, the environmentally conscious project includes outdoor terraces, a nature trail, and a putting green. With its modern design,
one-bedroom villa suites with private heated pools, and exciting honeymoon activities like shipwreck diving (Bermuda’s coastline holds the world record for most wrecks per square mile), The Loren at Pink Beach is a popular hotel for newlyweds. The century-old Cambridge Beaches Resort, with its full-service marina and European-style spa, and Azura Bermuda, a boutique hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the South Shore, are further postnuptial hotels to think about.
In addition to swimming and tanning, newlyweds can visit Black-owned establishments and other historical sites along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, or, via a collaboration with the Bermuda National Trust, plant a cedar tree to honor their special day. The Birdcage is a seasonal rooftop cocktail bar where you can toast to married life at sunset.

For the Faroese fairy tale, the Faroe Islands
Grimm’s Fairy Tales would be inspired by a road trip throughout the Faroe Islands, and a fairy wedding deserves a storybook honeymoon. The North Atlantic archipelago is well-connected by tunnels and bridges, and there are mom-and-pop hotels dotted across the islands. Fly into Vágar Airport and pick up a car at 62°N Car Rental. Young farmers Harriet and John serve their Airbnb guests delicious breakfasts, including eggs from their own chickens, at Hanusarstova, a light-filled hamlet in the village of Æðuvík, just 20 minutes’ drive from the capital of Tórshavn.
As an alternative, couples can stay at the four-star Hotel Brandan in Tórshavn, which has earned a Green Key certification, and take day trips along the Sóljuleiðir, or Buttercup, pathways, which are named after the Faroese national flower. Turf roof homes tucked away among rolling green hills, a plethora of quaint settlements (Tjørnuvík, Gjógv, and Skálavík, to mention a few), and tumbling waterfalls and breathtaking hiking routes await adventurous honeymooners who take their time.

For the enjoyment of the epicures, New Orleans
New Orleans, the city of powdery-sweet beignets, killer po’boys, and muffulettas the size of hubcaps, is the ideal destination for couples who originally united over a shared love of food and drink. In the Marigny area, check into the Hotel Peter & Paul, a 19th-century Catholic church, convent, and schoolhouse that has been meticulously restored to become one of the best boutique hotels in the South.
Numerous unique rooms with hand-painted tile showers, Italianate marble fireplaces, and rich tapestries are available for couples to choose from. More significantly, the former rectory is home to the fantastic Elysian Bar, which serves aperitivo from 3 to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and has a $9 pineapple drink. The perfect way to warm up for the upcoming bar crawl and food binge is with shrub daiquiris and rillettes.
We recommend starting with a round of Vieux Carrés while hopping around the historic Hotel Monteleone’s Carousel Bar before heading to Fritai for creative Haitian-Creole fare like kabrit (crispy twice-cooked goat with rice and beans, fried plantains, and spicy relish), the charmingly Frenchified N7 in the Bywater for the housemade charcuterie and frog legs karaage with sambal aioli, or the Rabbit Hole Supper Club pop-up at Trap Kitchen, where the oddball parade of genre-rattling dishes occasionally includes a burnt grain salad we still dream about. When you’re ready for a nightcap, head to the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot’s velvety-luxe Peacock Room, where the atmosphere is seductive and the spirit menu is extensive.
The Germaine Cazenave Wells Mardi Gras Museum, hidden above Arnaud’s Restaurant; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art; and City Park, with its elegant old oak trees dripping Spanish moss, are always worth a detour if you have any time for non-food pursuits.

Alaska, seeking adventure in the north
The 49th state is often visited from the deck of a ship, but for more do-it-yourself honeymooners, taking the car, foot, and aircraft routes pays off. Begin at the Tutka Bay Lodge, a family-run establishment on Kachemak Bay close to Homer. The rustic-luxe boutique hotel, which is surrounded by 35 acres of natural woodland, provides deep-sea fishing, bear viewing, sea kayaking, meditation, yoga, cooking lessons every day, and tours of the family’s surrounding flower farm.
The next destination is Salted Roots in Seward, a quaint A-frame cottage. Its private deck is the ideal place to relax after a full day of sightseeing (or flightseeing, as the situation may be) on the Kenai Peninsula, sandwiched between Resurrection Bay and a spruce forest. Ask the couple who manage Flamingo Lounge, the town’s artisan cocktail bar-turned-steakhouse, for advice on hiking, spotting orcas, and where to find the most unusual Alaskan souvenirs.
Fly an hour north to Fairbanks for a spectacular finish, then spend the night in a glass dome igloo at Borealis Basecamp outside of Fairbanks. It is perfect for seeing the aurora borealis, which is most active from late August to April, and is situated between tall spruce trees beneath a pitch-black sky. You can spend a day at the Arctic Circle or stroll with reindeer in a boreal forest while you’re not observing the night sky.

Vietnam, for the enchanting train ride
The Vietage by Anantara, a luxurious train carriage run by Anantara, is among the most tranquil ways to take in the splendor of Central Vietnam. It starts in Đà Nẵng and winds its way through the picturesque countryside and South China Sea until coming to a stop at Quy Nhơn, a seaside town. The 12-passenger vehicle has a full bar and is decorated in the French Colonial style of the 1920s and 1930s. In addition to a three-course meal prepared with regional delicacies and a 15-minute head-and-shoulder massage, couples can enjoy bottomless beer and bubbly during the six-hour trip.
Anantara’s Exploring the Central Coast package (starting at $1,235 for two people) is the best way for honeymooners to experience the journey. A half-hour’s drive from Đà Nẵng, it includes two nights in a luxurious balcony room at Anantara Hoi An, and two nights in a glitzy villa on the ocean at Anantara Quy Nhơn Villas. It also includes two one-way tickets on The Vietage. The rate includes daily breakfast and dining credits, so honeymooners won’t even need to worry about feeding themselves.

For the adventure of the trekkers, the Great Smoky Mountains
The five-day Great Smoky Mountains Hiking trip from REI Adventures (starting at $5,899 per person for a private guided tour) will leave couples who are united by their love of the outdoors speechless, both literally and figuratively. A visit to the 19th-century John Oliver Cabin in Cades Cove, one of the park’s oldest historical buildings, and Andrews Bald, a double peak on Forney Ridge and the highest bald in the Smokies, are included in the itinerary, which winds through the 522,427-acre Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. In addition, it traverses a section of the Appalachian Trail, ending in the historic Shuckstack fire tower with expansive views of Fontana Lake.
Hiking between four and nine miles a day will be moderately difficult, but honeymooners won’t have to struggle at night thanks to accommodations at the 76-year-old Nantahala Village Resort and glamping in safari-style tents from Under Canvas, which have real beds, private bathrooms, and wood-burning stoves. Included are transportation from Knoxville, park fees, meals, and guides.

For the Arabian dream, Dubai
Dubai is one of the most attractive places for couples who think passion and luxury go hand in hand. The largest city in the United Arab Emirates is home to over a dozen Michelin-starred restaurants, some of the most luxurious hotels and spas in the world, and a cityscape full of glittering architecture. With its tiled hammam, lagoon-style swimming pools (including one just for adults), and jewel-toned Arabian rooms, One&Only Royal Mirage is a gorgeous basecamp.
The entire city is waiting for you when you force yourself to leave the five-star establishment: Enroll in a Dubai Fountain lake ride at the base of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest structure in the world; Discover the stunning Lost Chambers Aquarium at Atlantis The Palm, which is home to over 65,000 marine animals, or take a traditional abra to Dubai Creek, where you can peruse mountains of vibrant spices and gallons of wedding jewelry in the traditional spice and gold souks, respectively.
Stay in Bab Al Shams, a magnificent resort in the Arabian Desert located just outside the city boundaries, to round off the journey. Here, people spend their days riding camels, smashing dunes, and splashing in multi-tiered, Escher-style bathing pools. Use your imagination and enjoy stargazing on the nights.

Montana, for the outdoors getaway
Newlyweds took notice when the team behind The Resort at Paws Up, a four-time Readers’ Choice Award winner and one of the most prestigious addresses in rural Montana, revealed that a new adults-only getaway would open in the summer of 2021. The Green O is located on the same 37,000-acre working ranch as Paws Up, which is less than 40 minutes’ drive from the Missoula airport but deep within the wooded Blackfoot River Valley. The Tree Haus layout is two stories, but the 12 independent guest cottages at The Green O feature huge windows overlooking the tranquil woods.
It feels the most private because it is 23 feet above the earth. Couples can spend their time horseback riding, hot air ballooning, and whitewater rafting when they’re not lounging by one of the two fireplaces or relaxing in the outdoor hot tub on the ground floor. The overnight fee includes airport transportation, food, wine, and on-site usage of a Lexus SUV.

Indonesia, as a refuge for seekers
At AYANA Estate on Jimbaran Bay in southern Bali, newlyweds who are eager to deepen their connection can align their minds, bodies, and souls. The property’s cultural and holistic wellness offerings, such as sunrise yoga, sound bath meditation, Hindu temple visits, and batik painting classes, are what really draw guests to the one-bedroom cliff villas with their expansive views of the Indian Ocean, plunge pools, and personal butler service. There are also tours of the Saka Museum, an architecturally stunning cultural center that delves into the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana.workshops for herbal remedies,
where guests gather their own materials from the resort’s five-acre organic farm; and thalassotherapy, a spa procedure that warms saltwater to the ideal temperature to promote circulation and restore the mineral balance of the body. Additionally, honeymooners can arrange a couples massage in twin villas perched atop rocks facing the ocean or dinner on a private pier surrounded by flickering tiki torches.
Take a one-hour flight from Bali to Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Indonesia’s Lesser Sunda archipelago, which is home to over 4,000 Komodo dragon monitor lizards and is renowned for its rocky terrain and scaly inhabitants. At Labuan Bajo’s AYANA Komodo Waecicu Beach, drop your baggage and make your way directly to the water: Among the most popular activities here are sea kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling at Menjerite Island, coral planting with a marine biologist on staff, and touring Komodo’s many corners on board Lako di’a, a traditional phinisi yacht suited for Balinese aristocracy.
